Cleaning a Cedar Fence in Texas: Weathering, Mold, and Restoration

Cedar is the most popular fence material in Texas — and DFW's climate creates specific weathering challenges. Here's how to restore a weathered cedar fence and protect it going forward.

What Texas Weather Does to Cedar Fences

Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, but it weathers visually in DFW's climate faster than in most places. The combination of intense Texas UV (which bleaches cedar to silver-gray), DFW's periodic heavy rains (which leach natural tannins and drive moisture into the wood), and summer humidity (which creates mold and mildew conditions) creates a multi-directional attack on cedar fence appearance.

Mold and mildew are the most significant visual issue for cedar fences in DFW. North-facing fence sections, sections under tree canopy, and fence bases that stay moist from irrigation or soil contact develop dark green or black mold staining within 2-3 years without maintenance. This staining is biological rather than dirt — it requires biocide treatment, not just pressure washing.

Tannin bleeding — the dark brown streaks that appear on new cedar as natural tannins leach with rain — is most visible in the first 2-3 years of a fence's life. It's often mistaken for mold but has a different cause and responds to different treatment.

Cedar Fence Cleaning and Restoration

Step one: biocide treatment for mold and algae. Apply oxygen bleach or diluted sodium hypochlorite to all fence sections, allow 15-20 minutes, allowing chemistry to kill biological growth before washing.

Step two: fence cleaner/brightener application. Cedar-specific cleaners (oxalic acid-based brighteners) restore the natural wood color and remove UV gray and tannin staining simultaneously. Apply with a brush or pump sprayer, work into the wood, allow dwell time, rinse at low pressure.

Step three: low-pressure rinsing. Cedar requires 400-800 PSI maximum with fan nozzles. High pressure raises cedar grain significantly and creates a fuzzy, rough surface texture. Work with the grain direction.

Step four (optional but recommended): cedar stain or sealer application to clean, dry wood. A penetrating cedar stain provides UV protection, mold resistance, and moisture repellent properties. In DFW, annual or biannual stain/sealer application maintains cedar fence appearance for decades.

Maintenance Schedule

Annual spring cleaning after cedar and oak pollen season, with stain reapplication every 2-3 years, maintains Texas cedar fences in excellent condition. Blues Home Services provides cedar fence cleaning throughout DFW. Call (214) 307-2127.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oxalic acid-based brightener applied to the fence surface removes UV-caused silver-gray and restores the natural honey-brown cedar color. Apply after biocide treatment, allow dwell time, then rinse at low pressure.
At low pressure (400-800 PSI with fan nozzles), yes. High-pressure washing raises the cedar grain aggressively, creating a rough, splintery surface. Low pressure with appropriate chemistry is more effective anyway.
Annually in spring. Fall cleaning is beneficial for sections with heavy biological growth. Stain or sealer application every 2-3 years is appropriate for most DFW cedar fences.
Yes — cedar's natural oils provide rot and insect resistance appropriate for Texas. With annual cleaning and periodic staining, cedar fences last 15-25 years in DFW.
