Cleaning Natural Stone Exterior Surfaces in DFW: Limestone, Sandstone, and Granite

DFW's luxury home market uses significant amounts of natural stone — limestone, sandstone, and granite — on exterior facades, columns, and entry features. Each stone type has specific cleaning requirements.

Common Natural Stone in DFW Exteriors

DFW's upscale communities — Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville, Highland Park — feature significant natural stone on exterior facades, entry columns, retaining walls, and hardscape. Texas limestone (Austin Stone) is native to the region and widely used. Sandstone (from Texas and Colorado quarries) appears in many custom homes. Granite is used for entry features, columns, and decorative elements.

Each of these stone types has different chemistry sensitivities that determine the safe cleaning approach. Limestone is calcium carbonate and acid-sensitive — the same issue as in pool coping. Sandstone is iron-bearing in many varieties, making some acid applications risky for color change (iron compounds react with acid to create discoloration). Granite is the most chemically resistant of the three, tolerating most cleaning chemistry at appropriate dilutions.

DFW's climate creates biological growth on all natural stone exterior surfaces — particularly on north and east-facing stone that receives morning shade and stays damp after rain. Tannin staining from DFW's oak and pecan trees creates organic staining specific to the region.

Stone-Specific Cleaning Approach

Limestone exterior surfaces: biocide pre-treatment for biological growth, followed by alkaline or neutral chemistry cleaning. Acid-free chelating agents for any mineral scale. Never use muriatic acid on limestone — even diluted, it etches the surface permanently.

Sandstone: biocide treatment for biological growth, neutral pH chemistry for general cleaning. Test any acid chemistry on an inconspicuous area before full application — iron-bearing sandstones can react with acid to produce orange-brown discoloration that is difficult to reverse.

Granite: the most cleaning-tolerant stone type. Standard alkaline cleaners at moderate dilution address biological growth. Hard water scale responds to diluted acid treatment (appropriate for granite). Post-cleaning granite sealer application protects against future staining penetration.

Professional Stone Assessment

Blues Home Services identifies stone types on client properties before any chemistry is applied. Natural stone assessment is the first step in any exterior stone cleaning. Call (214) 307-2127 for natural stone cleaning service in DFW.

Frequently Asked Questions

Biological growth — algae and mold — driven by DFW's humidity and shade conditions on limestone surfaces. Biocide treatment and soft washing removes it. Austin Stone (a variety of Texas limestone) is acid-sensitive and should be cleaned with alkaline or neutral chemistry.
At appropriate pressure and chemistry — yes. Stone type determines the pressure ceiling and chemistry selection. Limestone requires the gentlest approach; granite tolerates more.
Annually is appropriate for most DFW natural stone installations. North and east-facing surfaces with heavy biological growth may benefit from spring and fall cleaning.
Yes. Penetrating stone sealers applied after cleaning protect against future staining penetration. We provide sealing as an add-on to stone cleaning service.
