Travertine Cleaning in Scottsdale and the Phoenix Metro

Arizona's hard water and UV intensity create specific challenges for travertine pool decks, patios, and entryways.

Travertine in the Arizona Environment

Travertine is one of the most popular natural stone choices for Scottsdale pool decks, patios, and entryways. Its natural texture provides slip resistance, and its neutral tones complement Arizona's desert aesthetic. However, travertine's open pore structure creates specific challenges in Arizona's environment. Calcium scale from Phoenix metro's hard water — commonly 400–700+ PPM — accumulates rapidly in the stone's pores, forming a white haze that obscures the stone's natural beauty. Organic growth and mineral staining compound over time without professional maintenance.

The combination of intense UV radiation and temperature extremes — from 115°F summer days to near-freezing winter nights — stresses travertine joints and surface sealers more aggressively than most US climates. Unsealed or improperly sealed travertine in Arizona develops significant staining, scaling, and biological growth within one to two seasons.

Professional Travertine Cleaning and Sealing

Professional travertine cleaning requires pH-neutral chemistry — travertine is calcium carbonate and reacts negatively to both acidic and strongly alkaline cleaners. Blues Home Services uses travertine-safe enzyme and surfactant solutions applied at low pressure, targeting biological growth and hard water scale without etching the stone. Calcium deposits that have built up over multiple seasons may require professionally applied neutralized acid treatment at the correct concentration and dwell time.

Following cleaning, a penetrating impregnating sealer is applied. Penetrating sealers enter the pore structure and repel water and oil from within without changing the stone's appearance. Surface film sealers are not recommended for Arizona travertine — they trap moisture beneath the stone during thermal cycling, leading to delamination and haziness. Properly sealed Arizona travertine maintains protection for 2–3 years.
