The most common mistake in DIY and rushed professional holiday lighting installation is using the wrong clip type for the roofline material. Arizona homes have three primary roofline types that each require a different clip approach: concrete and clay tile (the most common in Scottsdale and Phoenix metro), asphalt shingle (common in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek), and wide-exposed-fascia homes.
Concrete and clay tile rooflines require tile-specific clips that grip the lip of the tile course or the ridge cap without adhesive, nails, or mechanical penetration. These clips distribute the holding force across the tile edge and can be removed cleanly in January without damage. Universal all-in-one clips are designed for asphalt shingle and work by gripping the shingle edge — they do not hold correctly on tile and result in sagging or detachment. Fascia clips attach to the fascia board itself and are appropriate where the fascia is wide and accessible, providing the most consistent alignment.
Eave Alignment: What It Is and Why It Matters
Eave alignment means every strand of holiday lights is hung at the same height at the eave — straight, consistent, and parallel to the ground. When clips are placed at consistent intervals and consistent height, the resulting roofline looks clean and deliberate from the street. When clips are placed at irregular heights or intervals, strands sag between attachment points, drape at uneven heights, and create a visual that reads as improvised regardless of how nice the lights themselves are.

Arizona's winter weather includes wind events — not the dramatic haboobs of monsoon season, but December and January winds that can dislodge improperly clipped strands. The correct clip for your roofline material, placed at the right interval, holds through typical Arizona winter wind. Incorrect clips — particularly universal clips used on tile — can dislodge in wind, especially if the tile lip profile doesn't match what the clip was designed for.
